Instantaneous Transfer

A Look at the Mysteries of T.I.M.E Stories: Under the Mask

13 April 2016 | TIME Stories

By 1922, British archaeologist Howard Carter had spent five years searching—unsuccessfully—for the tomb of the little known Egyptian boy king, Tutankhamen. His backer, the rich Lord Carnavon, became impatient and informed Carter that he wanted to call off the search, but Carter managed to persuade him to support his efforts for one more year. Then, in February of 1923, Howard Carter found steps hidden among the debris near the entrance of a tomb that had already been looted. He followed the steps, and in so doing, discovered the sealed burial chamber of King Tut, along with its many riches, chief of which was Tut's solid gold funeral mask…

That's the discovery of King Tut's tomb as it happened in the history we all share. But what if that history were somehow altered?

In Under the Mask, the second expansion for T.I.M.E. Stories, the discovery of King Tut's tomb has been altered. The funeral mask has gone missing, and without it, Howard Carter's discovery won't resonate throughout the world and throughout the ages, history threatens to unravel, and the future stands poised on the edge of disaster. To keep time from fracturing and falling apart, you and your fellow T.I.M.E. agents must travel back to ancient Egypt and recover the pharaoh's mask.

Unfortunately, you begin with far more questions than answers, and the tachyon insertion process that enables your investigations is extremely expensive. For the good of the T.I.M.E. Agency and its ability to safeguard our reality's main temporal timeline, you need to find your way quickly to the mask and the end of your mission—something not easily managed in a distant time, place, and culture.

The Instantaneous Transfer Device

Fortunately, you and your fellow agents have been granted access to an extremely powerful piece of technology—the Instantaneous Transfer Device (I.T.D.) . This is an extremely handy, limited-use device that allows you to change receptacles in the middle of your runs. This means you can gain access to the new receptacle's knowledge and contacts, both of which may prove invaluable to your crime-solving efforts.

In T.I.M.E. Stories and Under the Mask, you conduct your investigations by spending time units and assigning your receptacle to investigate different areas. These are represented by cards, and when you explore a card, you get to flip it over and read the reverse side. Unless you share it, this knowledge is then yours and yours alone. You can begin your investigation right now by clicking on any of the cards above to see what you'll find when you explore them.

But there's also a risk; you won't know the full extent of your new receptacle's talents until you make the transfer, meaning you might find yourself in command of a receptacle poorly suited to the challenges that lie before you. And while you could theoretically initiate another transfer, the device chews through energy like nothing else; the number of transfers you make with it is extremely limited.

Where Will You Begin?

Tachyon insertion process initiated. When next you view the world, it will be a world many eons removed from the one in which you entered your caïsson. The hot Egyptian sun will beat down upon your back, the air will flow thick and slow into your lungs, and you'll feel the soft, rolling motion of the felucca below you as it's drawn along the current of the Nile. Somewhere, someone will have stolen King Tut's funeral mask, and it will be up to you to recover it and replace it in King Tut's tomb.

Where will you start your investigation? The thief and the mask could be anywhere. Where will you look? Who will you become?

Welcome to Egypt. You may click on the left-most card above to begin your adventure!
