The Elegant Solution

Watson & Holmes Is Now Available

23 March 2017 | Watson & Holmes

“The blunt accusation, the brutal tap upon the shoulder—what can one make of such a dénouement? But the quick inference, the subtle trap, the clever forecast of coming events, the triumphant vindication of bold theories—are these not the pride and the justification of our life’s work?”

–Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, The Valley of Fear

The streets of Victorian London: a wellspring of crime in all its forms—theft, arson, the drug trade, blackmail, and murder most foul. And though the police may be hopelessly bewildered by all these dark misdeeds, you are not the only one capable of cracking the case. In fact, only one of you can win the glory of finding the solution first! Take to the streets, investigate the crime scene, and solve the case—Watson & Holmes is now available at your local United States retailer.

Piece the Clues Together

Though Watson & Holmes shares distinct elements with another Sherlock Holmes-themed game from Space Cowboys—Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective—the two games are completely distinct and unique. Perhaps the most important difference is that Watson & Holmes is a competitive game, rather than a cooperative game.

In each of the thirteen mysterious cases in Watson & Holmes, you’re not just pitting your wits against the case, attempting to see through red herrings and find the truth. You’ll need to outwit the other players at the table, working efficiently and making dazzling leaps of logic from the clues that you gather along your way.

Every case features a different mystery, from The Mysterious Disappearing Prestige to The Adventure of The Book of the Dead. No matter which criminals you’re pursuing, however, the answer is spread across the location cards on the table—and only your keen wit and cunning deduction can tie these separate strands together. Each round, you’ll visit one of these location cards, reading the text on the back of the card and drawing your conclusions from the secrets that you find.

Of course, the science of deduction is only half the game. Before you can interview the suspects and inspect the crime scene on the back of a location card, you first need to travel there… and your opponents are racing to get there first. Whenever you move to a location card, you may spend any number of carriage tokens. You don’t need to spend any, but any opponent can move to the same location as you, so long as they spend more carriage tokens! When this happens, you must leave your current location, forcing you to choose a new location or return with more carriages.

When a player arrives with more carriage tokens, the first player is ousted!

Every location that you visit discloses a little more of the mystery, pulling back the shroud that hides the truth from plain sight. You’ll visit these locations in turn, slowly piecing the mystery together, until you decide you have enough information and knock on the door of 221B Baker Street, to present Sherlock Holmes with your solution. If you’re correct, you win the game, but an incorrect answer immediately eliminates you. You face a difficult choice: if you delay, another player may reach 221B before you… but if you move too quickly, can you be certain you have the correct solution?
